13 phones seized at Amritsar Central Jail, 15 inmates arrested : The Tribune India

Four days after a video capture of several prisoners using drugs in Amritsar Central Jail went viral, the city’s police have booked two prisoners for the same.

Although the prison authorities were tight-lipped about the incident, Minister of Prisons Harjot Singh Bains had ordered an investigation into it. Two days later, he himself carried out a surprise check in the prison which resulted in the recovery of eight mobile phones, as well as a large number of packets of cigarettes and packets of bidis during it.

Police said following investigations, the inmates who were seen using drugs were identified as Paramjit Singh, alias Pamma, of Patti Behniwal in Sultanwind village and Naval Sood of Parshant Vihar in Rohini (Delhi).

Meanwhile, while checking into the prison, staff confiscated 13 cell phones and intoxicants from 15 prisoners who had been booked by the police in four separate FIRs.

Besides Paramjit and Naval Sood, the police have booked Manpreet Singh from Celebration Enclave, Shamsher Singh from Jigjeana village, Manjit Singh alias Makhni, from Prem Nagar, Meera Kot Chowk, Sukhchain Singh from Shaheed Udham Singh Nagar, Jatinder Singh from SUS Nagar, Surinder Singh from New Kot Atma Ram, Vishal Singh from Pandora village, Parminder Singh , aka Sona, from the village of Sialka in Mattewal.

Deputy Superintendent of Prison Avtar Singh told police that prison staff confiscated nine mobile phones from them while 12 sedative pills were recovered from Manjit Singh Makhni.

Similarly, four mobile phones were confiscated from Mukesh Kumar from Bihar, Akashdeep Singh from Banga in Mattewal, Gurjant Singh from Bachre village in Tarn Taran, Dharwinder Singh from Bhalaipur in Mehta and Sajan Singh Piddi from Gujjarpura locality here.
