Madurai City Police have set up a new hotline to alert the police to the illicit sale of narcotics and banned tobacco products near educational institutions.
In a statement, Madurai City Police Commissioner T. Senthil Kumar said people can notify the police of those selling ganja and other intoxicants near schools and colleges in order to to enslave students to drugs and tobacco products.
They can call 0452-252-0760 and 83000-21100 or text or message via WhatsApp.
The commissioner said 274.137kg of ganja had been seized and 248 defendants charged in the current year.
While 137 ganja peddlers were bound on a good behavior bond, four of them were detained under Goondas Law.
Similarly, a medical store was sealed off for illegally selling prescribed drugs for intoxication.
Around 67,000 movable assets worth 68 ganja street vendors were seized, and in eight cases real estate was identified for seizure.
The police also conducted 666 awareness programs among school and college students.
Meanwhile, city police on Sunday seized 300kg of gutka illegally stored at a private travel office on South Veli Street and arrested four people in connection with it. The police are looking for two other people.
