Major news developments in Kerala on September 7, Wednesday

Here are the important developments in Kerala to watch today:

  • Onam festivities are gaining momentum across the state. Rain threatens to dampen the festive spirit in many districts as IMD predicts isolated heavy rains in the state through September 10.

  • Disaster management team and forest department officials are to carry out an inspection in Maripuzha following landslides in the forest region adjoining human settlements at Thiruvambadi grama panchayat in Kozhikode.

  • The agitation against the Vizhinjam project led by the Latin archdiocese TVM enters the 23rd day. A meeting of various fishworker organizations is expected to develop plans to expand the unrest to other coastal belts across the state.

  • Excise department officials are awaiting lab results from a beverage seized from a fruit juice shop in Kozhikode on Monday that was allegedly mixed with cannabis. While the store owner claims that hemp seeds, which contain no intoxicants, were mixed into the drink, the FSSAI and Excise Department reiterate that it is illegal to mix them with fruit juice. Squads have formed to find out if other stores sell similar drinks.

  • Police are facing criticism for trying to frustrate an investigation into the attack on security staff at the government medical college hospital. A court of first instance returns five DYFI activists to judicial detention. At least 10 suspects still at large.
