Malayalam superstar Mammootty has denounced producers’ claims that drug addiction is rampant in the film industry as a “one-sided view”.
Speaking to Manorama News while promoting his upcoming psychological thriller ‘Rorschach’, the Malayalam megastar pointed out that it’s not just actors who take drugs. It is a societal problem and we must think collectively to avoid it, he said.
“What else can be done but put up a sign asking people not to use these substances,” he said. “Life-threatening and behavior-altering intoxicants are available to everyone,” he added.
Mammootty questioned the effectiveness of a banning campaign while keeping grog shops open.
“One should not have biased and one-sided opinions. Society, as a whole, should seriously think about this,” he said. The full interview will air at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.
His comments come a day after he questioned the producers association’s decision to impose a temporary ban on Sreenath Bhasi who allegedly used foul words at a popular Malayalam presenter while promoting her latest film Chattambi. .
“Denial of work is wrong. Why should anyone be deprived of their livelihood,” Mammootty said when asked about the Bhasi incident. Mammootty also said it was his understanding that the ban had been lifted. But the association has not confirmed the development. Sreenath Bhasi had recently worked with Mammootty at Bheeshma Parvam.
Rorschach, directed by Nissam Basheer, famous “Kettiyollaanu Ente Maalakha”, will be released on October 7th. The film also stars Grace Antony, Sharafudheen and Jagadish.
Advance booking for ‘Rorschach’, which is produced by Mammootty, has already started. Dulquer Salmaan’s Wayfarer Films is bringing the film to theaters.
