Manipur prohibits the use of intoxicants for children under 18


Imphal: The government of Manipur has banned the use and sale of all intoxicants to children under the age of 18 to prevent children from abusing substances and other drugs.

On Monday, the Director of Social Welfare, Ngangom Utamaro Singh, issued a notice stating that the general public, restaurants, eateries and all relevant authorities should refrain from giving alcoholic beverages, narcotics, tobacco products or mind-altering substances to children under the age of 18, except on the order of a properly qualified physician as prohibited by Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act 2015.

In accordance with the provision of section 77 of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act 2015, anyone found guilty of breaching the law shall be liable to rigorous imprisonment for up to up to seven years, he said. .

Moreover, the offender will also be subject to a fine of up to Rs 1 lakh, he added.

Notably, the state government has made tremendous efforts in its war on drugs campaign in an effort to curb rampant drug addiction in the state.
