Thiruvananthapuram: Vimukthi Mission, the excise department’s campaign against drug addiction, would be accelerated by establishing and including Vimukthi clubs in all educational institutions by October 2 next year, said the Minister of Excise and local self-government MV Govindan.
Inaugurating a statewide month-long drug free awareness campaign in celebration of Gandhi Jayanthi’s 152nd day here, the minister said drug free programs will be held in more than 20,000 neighborhoods. of local governments in the state with the participation of the public. .
He added that a sustained campaign must be carried out to create appropriate awareness against drug addiction and that such a campaign should get the message across to the neighborhood level by mobilizing support from all sections of society to reach out to them. objectives set.
“We live in a time when even children fall prey to this evil. This will seriously affect future generations. The activities of the Vimukthi mission should reach all educational institutions in the state, as our ultimate goal is to eradicate this threat, ”the Minister said.
Stating that addiction to intoxicants has reached a dangerous level as it has started to affect the social consciousness and mental health of its victims, the minister said meeting this challenge is vital to building a healthy society.
Presiding over the function, Minister of Transport Antony Raju said that the authorities of educational institutions should be very careful that students do not have access to addictive substances.
“We must also be mindful of efforts by special interests to sabotage drug abuse programs. This must be properly taken into account when planning and carrying out the campaign, ”he said.
In office, the Minister of Excise also released a CD of short films on awareness programs carried out by the Vimukthi mission.
A series of programs will be held across the state during this month, highlighting the consequences of drug and intoxicating addiction.
