Taika Waititi will direct two Netflix shows Charlie and the Chocolate Factory


Have you ever wondered about the personal life of the Oompa-Loompas, the workers at Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory? Filmmaker Taika Waititi has the golden ticket to bring their world to life. On Thursday, Netflix announced that Waititi will write, direct and produce two original series based on the work of author Roald Dahl.

“The first is based on the world and characters of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” read a tweet from Netflix. “The second is a totally original vision of the Oompa-Loompas, which builds their world.”

Last month, Waititi won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for the dark comedy Jojo Rabbit, in which he plays Adolf Hitler. He also directed the 2017 films Thor: Ragnarokand co-directed What We Do in the Shadows in 2014.

Author Roald Dahl’s 1964 novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory has been adapted into two films. 1971’s Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory starred Gene Wilder as Wonka, and 2005’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory starred Johnny Depp as that role. Dahl also wrote a sequel, Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator, which was released in 1972.
