Wednesday Application Deadline for Amarillo Fire Department Entrance Exam


The Amarillo Fire Department would like to remind everyone that the deadline to apply for their next entrance exam is fast approaching. Applicants must apply to the City of Amarillo by 11:59 p.m. Wednesday.

This written exam will be a 100% general aptitude test, including math, reading comprehension and mechanical questions. Additionally, high scorers on the exam will be asked to schedule and pass a Candidate Physical Aptitude Test (CPAT), oral interview, background check, physical and drug screening.

The exam will be held at the Civic Center, 400 S. Buchanan – South Exhibit Hall, Entrance #1 or #2, at 9 a.m. on Saturday, October 1.

The starting salary for members of the Amarillo Fire Department is $46,068. Candidates must be at least 18 years old to take the test, but no older than 35 on the date of hire. A high school diploma or equivalent and a valid Texas Class C driver’s license are required. Applicants who served honorably in the United States Armed Forces, scoring 70 percent or higher, will receive an additional five points on their final score, AFD said in a press release.

AFD responds to a structural fire

The Amarillo Fire Department responded to a structure fire Monday morning in the area of ​​I-40 and S. Nelson. The first engine crew arrived to find a fire coming from the roof at the rear of a commercial building.

Firefighters cut through a chain-link fence and forced their way in through the back door of the metal building.

The Amarillo Fire Department responded to a fire just before 7 a.m. Monday near Interstate 40 and Nelson.  The fire was in the back of a metal shop;  no injuries were reported.

Firefighters were able to extinguish it quickly before it spread to the entire structure.

No injuries were reported. The fire started just inside the back door of a bathroom ceiling, AFD said. There were no occupants inside at the time.
